How Often Should You Wash Your Hair?
If you want healthy growing curls. It starts on wash day.
I get so many first time clients coming to me complaining about their dry hair and itchy scalps. And when I ask them how often are they washing their hair? They reply, "About once a month."
...And not even deep conditioning :'(
Curl Friends, washing your hair is VITAL to the health of your hair. Not only is it cleansing your hair by removing build up and other pollutants, but it's preventing fungus and bacteria from growing on your scalp, causing hair loss.
Trust me, I'm speaking from experience. When I was nine years old, my mother told me to take care of my own hair and as any other kid would do, I never washed it.
In the matter of months, my hair and scalp dried out. Dandruff and flake galore! Then my scalp grew these weird blisters. And when I got curious and touched them, they burst out clear pus (Yeah we're getting real). Those sore spots later became BALD SPOTS where I literally had no hair people!
Sad but true. All because I didn't wash my hair.
This does not have to be you.
How Often Should You Wash Your Hair?
In the salon I tell everyone, no matter how tight or loose your curls are, wash your hair at least once a week and use a deep conditioner.
Let's be honest, whatever your curl type, after about 7-10 days either your scalp is dry and itchy or your hair is greasy. *shrugs*
These are clear indicators that it's time to wash your hair. Your scalp is begging for moisture and your hair looks limp.
In some cases, I understand you just got a new style, like a silk press or braids, and you want your hair to look good for as long as possible. You can use an oil or dry shampoo to hold you over, but after two weeks, it's time to throw in the towel. You need to clean your hair.
To stay consistent, pick a day off and dedicate it your self-care day (my day is Tuesday). On this day you're washing your hair, deep conditioning, putting on your face mask, doing your nails or whatever else you need to do to relax.
I get too many women in my chair declaring they don't have enough time to take care of themselves because they are taking care of everyone else.
How can you possibly show up for anyone if you can't even show up for yourself?
Washing your hair is an act of self care and love. When you realize this, hopefully you'll start taking better care of your crown.
Sending love <3
