How to Properly Detangle Curly Hair
Stop ripping your hair out!
If your arms are aching after you've detangled your curly hair and you're left wondering how you're not bald after all the hair you've lost, you're detangling all wrong curl friend.
Despite what many people think, curly hair is THE MOST fragile hair texture because of its curves and bend in the hair strand. These bends are the weakest points in the hair strand, making it susceptible to breakage from daily combing and styling.
Without patience and the proper technique while detangling, you will be ripping out your healthy hair, causing breakage, and possible traction alopecia (patterned baldness).
So here are two quick tips on how to detangle your curls without losing your hair or your mind:
1. ONLY detangle your hair when it is wet and has conditioner in it!
Dry hair locks and grips on itself, making detangling a challenge. A good conditioner will provide slip while softening and smoothing the hair so you can glide tangles right out.
Save yourself some time by using your favorite deep conditioning treatment as your detangling agent. This will make sure you're properly distributing your treatment throughout your hair while removing tangles.
I always detangle with the Deep Repair Treatment in the salon, as it strengthens and noticeably softens the hair, allowing me to slide shed hair right out.
2. The right detangling tool will save you time and energy
Not all detangling tools are created equal. A lot of combs and brushes grip and tug at your hair causing pain and breakage. Most times you get so frustrated you toss the comb aside and start tearing the knots apart with your own hands (we've all been there).
This is why I invested in The Flex Brush in the salon. The Flex brush is designed not only to detangle hair but to stimulate the scalp by bending to the contours of the head to massage the scalp and promote natural oil production, encouraging hair growth while preventing breakage. Best part, the Flex brush can be used on wet or dry hair. You may use it to blow dry or even comb through extensions!
My clients are obsessed with this brush as it glides through the most tangled and coarsest hair textures with ease. It's gentle enough for tender and sensitive scalps, making it a great option for children as well.
I just stocked up on these brushes for my clients and they are already flying off the shelves. I only have a few left so get yours now before I'm sold out! Your hair will thank you.
