In this video I did my client's fourth keratin treatment. That means it’s been a full year of her getting keratin treatments.
She comes in every 3 months like clock work for her keratin retouch.
I just want to take you along her journey of one year of keratin treatments.
Keratin Treatment on Curly Hair Results
This was her virgin hair exactly one year ago. You can see she still has the fullness but she lacks a lot of definition and shine.
That's why she was ready to do a keratin treatment, she was ready for better manageability and ease.
Now look at the huge difference just one keratin treatment did for her curls. Her hair is less frizzy and with better curl definition.
It’s smoother, shinier, and those curls are popping!
Honestly, after her first keratin treatment she was hooked.
She said having better manageability with her curly hair, was far more valuable than the cost of the treatment.
My client expressed to me that since she’s been getting keratin treatments, her hair has been growing non-stop. So much so that she was finally ready to cut it!
Now isn't that a good problem to have. Imagine your hair being TOO long that you're just like, “Eh, over it!”.
The keratin treatment made her hair so strong that the ends of her hair were not splitting. She was able to retain all of her length to the point where she was now ready for a cute little cut.
I like to cut her hair curly because she wears her hair curly majority of the time. She only straightens her hair every so often.
Cutting her hair curly allows me to see how her hair will lay when it’s dry.
What is a Keratin Treatment?
I like to use the Cezanne Keratin Smoothing Treatment for my curly hair clients because it contains plant based ingredients and is 100% fromaldhyde free.
This allows for a more gentle application as it nourishes the hair.
If you’re unfamiliar with keratin treatments, keratin is a protein that is naturally found in our hair. It is responsible for keeping your hair healthy and strong. Keratin prevents damage, breakage and frizz.
Over time our hair loses keratin due to many factors such as environmental stressors, chemical treatments, over styling and daily wear and tear.
A keratin treatment replaces lost keratin by penetrating it into our hair. This process rebuilds and protects our hair from the inside out.
What is The Difference Between a Keratin Treatment and a Relaxer?
The difference between a keratin treatment and a relaxer or texturizer, is that a keratin treatment does not alter your curl pattern.
A lot of people ask me, “Will a keratin treatment loosen my curl pattern?”
My answer is, a keratin treatment will slightly elongate your curls but not by much. And that is because a keratin treatment is a smoothing treatment.
It’s purpose is to strengthen your hair and eliminate frizz. This allows you to achieve better curl definition and enhances your curl pattern.
It will be your own curls, but smoother and healthier.
The main difference between a keratin treatment and a relaxer is that a relaxer is designed to give you a new curl pattern. It does that by breaking up your curls’ DNA so that it can set a new pattern.
A relaxer uses sodium hydroxide to breakdown the bonds in the hair in order to straighten it. The nuetralizer stops the sodium hydroxide from breaking your hair down too much.
A keratin treatment doesn’t breakdown your hair. It adds protein to build your hair up. Heat is used to seal in the treatment. This results in smoother hair and reduced frizz.
Here are my client’s curls after processing the keratin treatment. You can see we have lost all the frizz and her hair is ready to seal in the treatment.
I tell people to think of this process as laminating paper.
The keratin treatment will be laminated or sealed onto the outside of the hair, so that it can protect it. In this analogy, your hair is the paper.
Just like with laminated paper, no matter how rough you are with it (within reason), that paper is going to be protected.
Can I Wear My Hair Curly With a Keratin Treatment?
A common question I get is, can you wear your hair curly with a keratin treatment or do you have to keep applying heat?
The answer is no. You can definitely wear your hair curly!
The only point of using heat is to seal in the treatment. After the treatment is sealed in, you can wet your hair down and your curls will pop. Only this time they will have better definition and with less frizz.
One of my favorite things about a keratin treatment is that you can feel it on your hair. It feels like a shield is on your strands making your hair feel stronger and healthier.
This is why my client has been able to grow out her hair long. The keratin treatment protected her hair, allowing her to retain length.
I would like to mention that I know a lot of people are scared about heat.
I just want to say that for me personally, I don't like to go over the hair more than three passes with the flat iron.
Three passes is also my max for a silk press. This is important because you don't want to choose a hairstylist that will run a flat iron through your hair multiple times with high heat.
That's when you start to see heat damage and a compromised curl.
I like to think of a keratin treatment like a silk press just with an extra step.
Can I Do My Own Keratin Treatment At Home?
Now, I've been getting a lot of questions from people asking where can they get their hands on the Cezanne Keratin Treatment so they can do it themselves at home.
Here’s the thing, the Cezanne keratin treatment is a professional treatment. You can only buy the treatment if you have a cosmetology license.
If you find it on Amazon, don’t trust it. It could be fake or old product.
In all honesty, I had to get certified in order to be able to use this treatment. I wouldn't trust anybody else who doesn't have that certification.
If you're not in the New York area and you can’t see me for a Cezanne Keratin Treatment in Brooklyn, you can always go to the Cezanne Keratin Smoothing Treatment’s website and find a hairstylist near you on their salon directory.
For her haircut she decided she wanted to try out some curtain bangs.
I love curtain bangs because they frame the face beautifully and highlight different features on the face depending on how they are cut.
We’re always obsessed with how shiny her hair turns out. The Cezanne Keratin Smoothing Treatment leaves the hair not only shiny but strong too.
It’s been a full year of keratin treatments and her hair is still so healthy.
If you’ve been considering getting a keratin treatment but want to know if it’s the right choice for your curly hair, feel free to book a virtual consultation and let’s chat!
